Born into a wealthy family Westland never had a solid understanding of what it actually meant to work and this bothered him greatly. Never seen in public wearing anything but a pristine white bathrobe, Westland’s pursuit to understand “the working man” and keep his robe clean turned his life into an obsessive-compulsive nightmare. For reasons unknown Westland’s obsessive ticks always centered on the number one. Eventually, through therapy, he became interested in philanthropy and started his own artist residency called “One Shed” . Participating artist’s were to spend one day inside a makeshift shed in the middle of nowhere Arkansas. They were given once piece of paper and one crayon and required to make only one piece of art. Hailed for his singular approach to contemplating singularity James D. Westland broke new philosophical ground in the artistic approach of oneness and the meaning of one. Westland died at the age of 51.
